  That was Sandsation in 2004
Sandsation 2004 broke all records: 110,000 visitors from all over the world marvelled at the sculpture park that fully represented the theme of the “Four Elements”. A total of 34 of the world’s best sand carving artists participated in the preparation of the sculptures. The world champions of the last three years Nigel Zabiela (Great Britain), Pavel Zadanouk (Russia) and Rusty Croft (USA) joined them for the first time ever in the world!

However, it was someone else who won the German Sand Sculpture Award: the jury’s favourite was the sand carving of Anique Kuizenga from The Netherlands, who thereby clinched the friendly competition of the best 10 carvers for herself. Nevertheless, the public remained faithful to the Indian Sudarsan Pattnaik: the artist from the Indian Ocean won the Berlin public prize for the second time since 2003 and was pleased as Punch.
The twelve metre-high central sculpture that was worked on by over twenty artists under the direction of Martin Tulinius formed the heart of the Sandsation. Many visitors lost their sense of the sands of time while viewing this piece....
