That was Sandsation in 2003
The first festival was held under the motto of "Faces of Berlin – Faces of a city". It took place alongside the former Berlin wall at the East Side Gallery and was a total success for all participants.
At the very beginning sculptures were forced to prove their stability during a fierce storm, after which visitors from Berlin, Germany and the rest of the world were able to experience and enjoy that beach feeling in the centre of Berlin

Den Deutschen Sandskulpturenpreis 2003 konnte Pavel Zadanouk aus Moskau mit seiner Skulptur "The Butcher" für sich behaupten; das Herz des Publikums jedoch eroberte sich der Inder Sudarsan Pattnaik mit dem Elefantengott "Ganeesh". Die Artist's Trophy ging an Nils Vegter für die Arbeit "The Pilgrim".
